Rogers Down! Send Backup!

19-Hour Outage Hits Millions!

Rogers Communications, one of Canada's largest telecommunications enterprises, experienced a network company's worst nightmare.

Early Friday, Rogers services became unavailable to millions of Canadian subscribers as the company witnessed a nationwide outage. Internet and cellular service became non-existent to individual users while countless businesses and governmental organizations experienced major disruptions in their services and everyday work processes.

Users were clearly unhappy with the lengthy outage from Rogers, and many took to Twitter to voice their opinions, especially as Rogers took a considerable amount of time issuing a statement about the situation and its cause.

The problem worsened as the outage started showing its full impact in various types of businesses and industries across the country.

According to Reuters, many businesses and restaurants were forced to put up CASH ONLY signs as debit and credits cards became non-responsive.

Citing the CBSA, CTV News stated that "travellers are being advised to provide paper copies of their proof of vaccination and travel details." Similarly, 911 and other service agencies all over Canada pointed out that Rogers customers were having difficulty connecting.

Officials discuss the cause of the outage.

As of yet, Rogers still doesn't have an estimation on when services will be fully back online nor have they released information about the main cause behind the disruption. Holding Rogers completely accountable, Tony Staffieri has made an apology by releasing an official statement, saying that Rogers will "proactively apply a credit to all our customers impacted by the outage."

A Little Backup Wouldn't Go Amiss...

This outage has resparked two main debates. 1) The need for more competition in the telecom industry, and 2) the importance of having a backup service to avoid such major and lengthy disruptions in your services.

While many chain businesses were finding it increasingly difficult to serve clients, cafes, libraries, and other public areas with operational Wi-Fi access became hotspots as numerous citizens flocked around them to get some much-needed signal.

Among MikroTik's long list of internet hardware, devices with cellular internet support, specifically LTE, 5G and LTE6, are highly reliable products that do not cost much, can be easily set up, and will quickly provide you with backup connectivity if you were to experience such an outage.

Staying online through a one-day outage like Friday means you get to continue serving your clients and not suffering hundreds or thousands of dollars due to a service shutdown.

Below are only some of the LTE products we have on offer.

It Won't Hurt to Have a Plan B.

It may seem unnecessary when your regular connection is up and running but a small investment now could save you a great deal of money and headache in the future. It is safe to assume that what happened to Rogers or something similar to it may and can occur again.

If your business suffered from the Rogers outage yesterday or you think it is high time to reinforce your internet network, just give us a call.
