Enhance Network Security in Two Moves!

Robust, Water-tight Security!

Network security is an issue that should never be taken lightly, and as a business owner or network manager, investing in this area can go a long, long way!

However, security doesn't have to cost a fortune if you have the necessary knowledge to use the tools already at your disposal. In session 29 of our online MTCNA program, we discuss ARP and how you can use it to tighten the security in RouterOS.

Watch below:

Here's the Gist!

ARP or Address Resolution Protocol is a critical function of the Internet protocol suite that is responsible for mapping Layer 2 MAC addresses with corresponding Layer 3 IP addresses.

Now, in an IP network where hosts also require each others' MAC addresses to be able to communicate via IP addresses, mapping and matching respective IP and MAC addresses can be a surefire way of ensuring network security since MAC addresses are completely unique to each network device and each of its ports.

We're Ready to Start the Next MTCNA Module!

How? Couldn't Get Any Easier!

To use the ARP function as a security measure, you only need to take two very easy steps as explained in the video above:

  • Create an static ARP record for the destination IP address with which you wish to communicate; and,
  • Make sure you set the Mode of that ARP record to Reply-Only.

Voila! That is it! By setting up an static ARP record with the two conditions above, you have permitted a specific IP address, paired with a unique MAC address, to be able to communicate with your network device.

For ARP, You Need to Understand DHCP...

To gain a better understanding of how ARP works, we recommend that, if necessary, you must first go over the concepr of DHCP and learn how the DHCP server and client work together.

Below and our YouTube channel, you can gain a basic though deep knowledge about these fundamental network functions:
