NAT: Solution to IP Host Disconnection

Source NAT: Easy Way to Bridge a Disconnection Gap

In session 16 of our Online MTCNA course, we're bringing you one simple solution to the disconnection issue caused by a source address defined on our Class Access Point.

With just a few mouse clicks, you can now easily use a couple of conditions and subsequent actions within the RouterOS NAT (Network Address Translation) feature to help pass your network traffic, e.g. ping or traceroute packets, to your target destination address.

How Does NAT Work?

NAT resembles a translator if you ever step foot in a foreign country.

As a tourist, think of yourself as a source IP address who, due to a language barrier, cannot communicate with the local population or, in the context of a network, an IP host.

Using the source NAT filter rule under the umbrella of RouterOS's firewall features, NAT takes your data packet, translates it to another IP address, and then delivers the packet to your intended destination address, similar to what a translator would do by understanding your language, translating it to another language, and conveying your intention to a local barman!
