Upgrading an operating system always sounds like a difficult task. Quite rightly so, since an OS provides the most fundamental basis for the entire activities of a hardware.

 

However, upgrading your devices RouterOS is in fact a piece of cake, and you just need to go over the procedure once to see how effortless it is.

RouterOS Upgrade in Brief

To put into as few words as possible, you'll need to observe the following when upgrading your MikroTik device's operating system:

  • If you're connected to the internet via your device, the more reliable way to upgrade RouterOS is the Check for Updates feature (available at System > Packages > Check for Updates);

 

  • If you're manually downloading the upgrade packages, make sure you get the packages that match your device's architecture (e.g. ARM, MIPSBE, TILE, etc.);

 

  • To migrate from one version to another, e.g. RouterOS v6 to v7, it is advised to first upgrade to the latest stable version of RouterOS v6, and then make the upgrade to RouterOS v7; and,

 

  • DO NOT forget to upgrade your firmware after upgrading the version of your device's RouterOS (available at System > RouterBOARDs > Upgrade).
